I speak with families all the time in South Florida who ask about how occupational therapy can help children and teens “get healthy.” One area that I emphasize is that we help our clients FIND BALANCE in their life. Balance helps us stay both physically and mentally healthy.
As occupational therapists, we have a deep understanding of people’s roles, habits, and lifestyle routines. We can help clients determine if they are happy with their current lifestyle, and where they would like to make changes. We then walk them through making and sustaining these changes.
One method I like to use is having the client walk me through a typical day hour by hour. We write down what they usually do each hour. This helps the client visualize how they spend their time each day. A new method I recently learned is having clients categorize and color-code their time. For kids I’ve divided this time into four different categories:
- Self-care: Taking care of their bodies
- Learning: School, new skills
So what is considered balanced? That depends on each of our clients. What we usually do is look at your day and decide, are you happy with the levels that each category is at?
This is an example of what one of my standard day looks like:
I can tell you right away that I would like to see more relaxation/play in my day. As you can see, most of my relaxation is watching an episode of Netflix at night with my husband. I also enjoy reading and painting, so I would love to see those fit in somewhere! Self-care is a HUGE part of my day that is really important to me. However, I would like to make it less time consuming and more routine, so that I can spend more time doing the things I love.
Other people may feel like an hour is more than enough relaxation and would instead want to spend more time sleeping. Or, they may just LOVE working and find it fun and relaxing. So it really all depends on each person and their values.
